New Jersey Nets Getting Inside 2009-10-30

New Jersey Nets Getting Inside 2009-10-30At least the NBA schedule maker didn't force the Nets and Vince Carter to have a long, protracted wait for their reunion in New Jersey.

They'll get it out of the way in the Nets' very first home game.

Carter and the Eastern Conference defending champion Orlando Magic will invade New Jersey, the state Carter called his professional home for the better part of five seasons, on Friday. The Nets, coming off a gut-wrenching, last-second 95-93 loss in Minnesota Wednesday, will try for their first win in their home opener. Orlando trounced Philadelphia in its opener first at home.

For the Nets, this season is the first time they've gone without a true Hall of Fame caliber superstar such as Carter or Jason Kidd since 2001. With a young roster, one of the main concerns was replacing not just Carter's 20-plus points a game, but also his undeniable leadership. Enter Devin Harris.

"He's definitely been a more vocal leader," claimed center Brook Lopez. "Pre-practice in the huddle, post-practice telling us things we need to do. He's been on top of everything."

And Harris knew he would inherit that responsibility the moment Carter was dealt to Orlando with Ryan Anderson in exchange for Courtney Lee, Rafer Alston and Tony Battie. And he's trying to lead with more than his mouth.

"It's more by example," said Harris, who'll be the instigator of what the Nets hope is a high-energy, racehorse style. "There are going to be bumps in the road with the young guys, but I'm going to work with them. The style fits us well."

TIMBERWOLVES 95, NETS 93: Behind Brook Lopez, one of three Nets to post a double-double, New Jersey was cruising, up 16 with just under seven minutes to go. Then execution, poise and decision-making took a holiday. The Timberwolves took full advantage of the sloppy, careless Nets and forged a 24-6 game-ending sledgehammer, capped by Damien Wilkins' follow-up shot at the buzzer that was reviewed and upheld. Lopez finished with 27 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks. Yi Jianlian and rookie Terrence Williams also had double-doubles.
