New Jersey Nets Notes, Quotes 2008-10-30
--Vince Carter was named the Nets' team captain, the first player not named Jason Kidd to hold the position since 2001. Nets coach Lawrence Frank said, however, there will be a committee watchdog approach to the team.

"We'll have leadership by committee, but Vince is the captain," Frank said. "Kind of a cross-section of guys on the team (will) meet and talk about things. It's one of those things where you don't want slippage. Vince is the captain, but it's everyone's team. Everyone has to take the responsibility."

Said Carter, "It's an honor that my teammates believe in me that I can lead them not only as the go-to guy but the inspirational leader ... Yes, I'm the captain, but we as players have talked about doing it together."

--Josh Boone emerged as the Nets' opening night starting center, despite missing more than a week with a rapid heartbeat scare and a strong showing from 7-0 rookie (No. 10 pick) Brook Lopez. In the end, Boone's experience -- he started 53 games last season -- had a lot to do with coach Lawrence Frank's decision.

"Looking at the parts, Josh, because he's been here, is probably a little bit more comfortable communicating and talking in terms of calling the defensive commands," Frank said.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Every team needs an identity, and the identity of this team is we feel we have great depth. We don't feel there's a lot of fall-off at any position. So there's no reason to pace yourself -- your partner will come get you, he's going to pick it up." -- Coach Lawrence Frank, on the Nets' 10-man, two-unit approach.
