New Jersey Nets Notes, Quotes 2009-10-18

New Jersey Nets Notes, Quotes 2009-10-18--G Devin Harris missed 13 games last season with injuries to his ankle, shoulder and hamstring. His style is such that it leads to contact as he takes constant hits going to the rim.

So when he came up with three injuries -- all deemed minor -- in a two-week span of pre-season, there was some concern. But not from Harris, who said he is not accustomed to small, nagging injuries.

"Usually, I'm the big hurt," he said. "I'd rather have it on Oct. 14 than have it anytime after the 28th (opening night). We're taking the time now to let it heal and rest."

Coach Lawrence Frank said the Nets will always err on the side of caution and said Harris' pre-season injury rash is "a fluke thing."

--G Courtney Lee admittedly was stunned when he first heard he was traded from the championship-caliber Magic to the rebuilding Nets. But as he settles in and get comfortable, Lee is looking more favorably on his new surroundings.

"I like the system. He (coach Lawrence Frank) likes to get up and down, play a fast-paced game," Lee allowed. "We want to get the ball past half-court in less than 2.5 seconds. That means the guards and the bigs have to get out run. That's the way I like to play, get up and down."

MAIN REASON NETS CAN WIN: The wings and the starting center. It's that simple. The Nets are blessed with good, young athletic talent that can get out and run in All-Star point guard Devin Harris, two-guard Courtney Lee, rookie Terrence Williams and second-year man Chris Douglas-Roberts. Add Brook Lopez at center and there is a formidable inside presence.

MAIN REASON NETS CAN LOSE: For the first time since 2001, the Nets enter a season without Jason Kidd or Vince Carter. So they miss that Hall of Fame caliber presence. But they also miss quality depth up front. Brook Lopez is a certified stud but after the center, the bigs are a huge question. Plus, any significant injury would be devastating.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I think it will come down to our bigs as a group. Obviously, Brook (Lopez) is going to be good. But our bigs as a group, how are they going to play?" -- Nets team president Rod Thorn, on the biggest question facing the Nets.
