New Jersey Nets Roster Report 2009-09-18

New Jersey Nets Roster Report 2009-09-18PLAYER NEWS:

--F/G Terrence Williams wowed teammates during the team's informal workouts with his passing. The Nets are enthused by the versatility of their first round pick out of Louisville and Williams has shown why.

"He's very athletic," said Courtney Lee, another young important piece. "He's one of the guys who loves to pass the ball. He'll get it to you on time. Any scorer or any player who wants to be a threat loves to play a guy like that. Terrence definitely complements Devin (Harris), myself or any of the scorers on the team."

--G Keyon Dooling might not be going full bore in training camp and the Nets won't mind one bit. They want the veteran ready for the start of the season when it counts.

"We've told him, 'We need you ready for November,'" said GM Kiki Vandeweghe. "The last thing we want is for him going too soon, suffering a relapse and then being out until January or so." Arthroscopic surgery on Dooling's hip removed loose particles in May.

--G Devin Harris is trying to earn enough credits through assorted courses, including some on-line, to earn his college degree from Wisconsin. He noted he was about 24 or 25 credits short of his degree with at least half of those credits required to be earned on campus.

"I've got two independent studies and sociology and I've got to find another class," Harris said, noting the process for his sociology degree is going "slowly. They didn't have anything for me to take last spring. I'm trying not to quit. Just going little by little."

MEDICAL WATCH:

--F Eduardo Najera, who underwent successful sports hernia surgery in March, is expected for training camp.

--G Keyon Dooling underwent successful arthroscopic surgery after the season to remove loose particles from his right hip. The Nets will move cautiously and he is expected to be ready for the start of the season.

DRAFT PICK:

Terrence Williams, G/F, 6-6, Louisville (first round) -- The Nets love his versatility and his athleticism. In Summer League games, he showed what Nets drafted him for: rebounding, defense, passing. But he also has shown a struggling shot which must improve -- he was 19-of-56 (.339) in five games. Overall, the Nets were very pleased with what they saw in initial test runs.
