New Jersey Nets Roster Report 2009-10-28

New Jersey Nets Roster Report 2009-10-28ANALYZING STARTERS:

G Devin Harris has three speeds: quick, quicker and that'll be four points on your license. The All-Star point guard has numerous assignments this season as he must score, pass and assume much of the leadership void created by Vince Carter's absence. He gets to the rim as well as anyone, witness his 8.8 free throw attempts per game last season.

G Courtney Lee was the primary long-term return for the Nets in the Vince Carter trade. The Nets love his upside and his quickness. The focus will be how he adapts to being one of the Nets' go-to scorers after a supporting role as a starter with the Magic.

F Chris Douglas-Roberts may win out as the starter at small forward over Jarvis Hayes. Douglas-Roberts shows a fearless knack for getting to the rim and is part of the team's stable of young athletic wings.

F Yi Jianlian may be the Nets' biggest X-factor. They like the wings and the center so at power forward, Yi must give the Nets more than a hang-on-the-perimeter approach. This is his third season, usually a critical campaign. Yi worked hard all summer trying to bulk and develop his post game.

C Brook Lopez was a rookie stud and the steal of the 2008 draft, being picked at 10. He will see the double-teams that last season were reserved for Vince Carter and how he reacts and passes out will be a crucial factor in the Nets offense. He is good, getting better.

G Rafer Alston came from Orlando and gives solid depth to the point. The Nets hope he stays happy and content as a reserve.

F Terrence Williams as shown all the versatility -- and even more defense -- than the Nets hoped they were getting when they drafted him 11th. In keeping with Net team history, his shot needs work and consistency.

F Jarvis Hayes could very well be the starting three but the Nets may opt to keep him on the bench where he was their most reliable reserve last season. Plus, he was injured late in pre-season, suffering a stress reaction (shin).

F Bobby Simmons was the Nets best three-point shooter last season (.447) and will get time at the three and four.

F Eduardo Najera, if he stays healthy, could be Yi's backup. He played in only 27 games last season.

F/C Josh Boone began last season in the starting five, was injured, lost the job and now is the four-five backup.

G Keyon Dooling underwent arthroscopic hip surgery after last season and continues rehabbing. He won't be back to playing shape until after the start of the season.

F/C Tony Battie battled an arthritic knee throughout pre-season. While he practiced and played in games, he rarely went more than halfway. He expects to be ready when the season starts, however.

F Jarvis Hayes seemed like the logical choice to start at small forward. But a late pre-season injury -- a right shin stress reaction -- put him on the shelf for at least a week. He is hopeful of being ready by the start of the season, barring any added complications.
