New Jersey Nets Roster Report 2009-09-04

--C Brook Lopez, at coach Lawrence Frank's behest, will be taking a crash course in Pau Gasol to watch how the Lakers' big man plays offensively. Frank wants more pick-and-roll play from Lopez.

"I'm sure he (Frank) will be more pick-and-roll (oriented). That went well, so we'll see. He wants me to watch Gasol tape," said Lopez, who hopes his play makes him a focal point without him demanding the ball. "Hopefully, things go the right way and I'll play well and it won't need to be said. My actions will be enough."

--G Courtney Lee admitted he was hardly thrilled when he first learned he had been traded from the Eastern champion Magic to the Nets. But he acknowledged that the opportunity presented by the Nets has helped form a different outlook.

"I got over that," Lee said. "Like any player in the situation I was in, where they had a good year and they were on the starting team that made it to the Finals, to get traded out of nowhere, it would definitely be a shocker. But just knowing the opportunity I had. The Magic, was a good team that made it to the Finals, but I was the fourth option on the team. Coming here and having a chance to be option two or three, that motivated me.

--F Jarvis Hayes assumed the role of Vince Carter this summer and made contact with all team members, bringing them together for early voluntary workouts in New Jersey.

"I told 'L' (coach Lawrence Frank) at the end of last season that I was going to try to do it this year, because we have four new guys, and we're trying to integrate them as quickly as we can. Just getting out there and playing, that's the best thing we can do right now."

--F Eduardo Najera underwent successful sports hernia surgery Mar. 13, ending his season. He is rehabbing well and expected for training camp. The Nets asked him to forgo playing for Mexico in the FIBA Americas Cup.

--G Keyon Dooling underwent successful arthroscopic surgery May 4 to remove loose particles from his right hip. He is expected to be ready for the start of the season.

Terrence Williams, G/F, 6-6, Louisville (first round) -- The Nets love his versatility and his athleticism. In Summer League games, he showed what Nets drafted him for: rebounding, defense, passing. But he also has shown a struggling shot which must improve -- he was 19-of-56 (.339) in five games. Overall, the Nets were very pleased with what they saw in initial test runs.
