The week ahead, but Tiger Woods won't be able to watch any of it

The week ahead, but Tiger Woods won't be able to watch any of it TODAY

The magical power of the "Dear Mr. Davis" billboard is put to the test in Pittsburgh, and the 49ers continue to disavow any knowledge of the thing scientists call "running game" in Seattle. San Jose State is at USF in Basketball, which one suspects will struggle to get an audience on an NFL Sunday. And today's hidden surprise, the Stanford women play North Carolina in the NCAA soccer final. Somewhere, Elizabeth Lambert dreams of what could have been.

Baseball's winter meetings begin in Indianapolis, which means lots of lobby-sitting, job-seekers, agents, and yes, agents, which leads you to ask what heinous behavior Indianapolis condoned to deserve this. The answer, of course, is not as much as Oklahoma City did to host the Warriors . There's also Ravens-Packers, and God, do we need Lambeau Field hip-deep in snow and frozen animals.

TUESDAY A fairly quiet day, which means you trundle off to a bar at lunchtime and watch Manchester United and Wolfsburg in the Champions League. If your boss asks for you, tell him or her you're giving blood while on jury duty, and after lunch, you're running toys to shelters. Hey, one of them has to work, right?

WEDNESDAY The Warriors are in New Jersey to play the Nets, which would have been a lot more fun if the Nets were actually 0-21 going in. As it is, it's two hours of feh. In non-feh events, the Kings are in San Jose to play the Sharks, and the Cal men's Basketball team is at UOP.

THURSDAY The winter meetings end, and the Indianapolis cops breathe a sigh of relief after dealing with that Billy Beane incident at The Old Spaghetti Factory. Also, the Steelers play the Browns in a game that the NFL Network would cheerfully return if it could.

FRIDAY The North Coast Section has its prep football championships starting tonight in preparation for the state championships. Meanwhile, it's Stars-Sharks in another divisional thing, and the Warriors remove their Hazmat suits after playing the Nets, and deal with the Bulls in Chicago.

SATURDAY The Heisman Trophy is awarded, and Toby Gerhart's streak of not winning is extended to 22 years; on the other hand, it's the only thing that didn't go spectacularly right for him, so I think he'll endure. Also, a people-beating-the-hell-out-of-other-people doubleheader, just the thing for the holiday season. Vitali Klitschko defends his WBC heavyweight title in Bern, Switzerland, against Kevin Johnson, who apparently took time away from his job as mayor of Sacramento to do this. Also, UFC 107 features B.J. Penn and Nightmare Sanchez, although we suspect it would be more fun if it were Sean Penn and Freddy Sanchez. And the Sharks are in Phoenix, so maybe we get some Frazer McLaren-Paul Bissonnette fist exchanges in keeping with the peace-on-earth theme.
